DAY THREE: Creating with Collage Art, and your work may include cloth you dyed on Sunday or plan to bring your choice of fabrics, tools of your choice for layering and design play and some Matt Medium for layering paper and cloth.

DAY FOUR: DYEING with RUST - the most fun project day using bits and pieces of rusty finds" from your garage, some searches in local barns, found objects, and even some metal pieces hidden in the basement that will provide rust with mordants in our dye/print pots. Stitch play is always so much fun with rusty bits on cloth!

DAY FIVE: Students will continue to play with all of the projects underway on days one - four and on Friday, and/or for fun, we will work on creating hand or machine-pieced Journal Covers with the cloth you have worked on all week. This will hopefully encourage you to enjoy the memories of ART Camp in one or more great referral journals - (5 x 7 journals provided). Please plan to tuck in your sewing machines if possible - you may need them all week, and bring an extension cord!

And on Day Two, July 29th, we will be working to design and create the base cloth for a wonderful BORO ART, collaged fabric handbag... and the tutorial will be shared with registered students before the additional Camp Project on these last two days... COME PLAY!!

                                  UNIQUE BORO ART

Creating with Japanese Shibori Stitch… April 1, 2023

(In the Activity Room, Level One at the TETT Centre, Kingston, ON)

Bethany Garner, Fibre Artist, and Workshop Instructor

AN INTRODUCTION:

BORO ART is the result of repetition stitching over time and is a quiet, even solemn path to artwork as a selection for those who love the art of working with cloth. Japanese, who lived in small villages surrounded by mountains, had to repair their clothing and fabric by hand-stitching because of limited resources. They didn’t have enough money or logistics to get the new fabric from the market. In other words, they had to repair instead of replace their fabric. They patched a hole in one piece of fabric, then kept using it. When they found another hole, they patched it or mended it. The repetition of hand-stitching/repairing made a great art piece, and it is called Boro.

Today we create artwork that is often made with hand-dyed indigo-colored cloth and sometimes using items that we have in our closets and drawers, like the pocket of a pair of a family member’s jeans, or a small pile of cloth that is cut up using items from thrift stores or household linens, work a bit and often with holes of tears that leave the cloth in conditions that require mending.

The focus for our workshop day is building on the fabric we have, using the art as a learning session to encourage working along with the handouts/samples I will share and encourage you to be inspired by and strive to create your own designs. There is nothing better than a day with a few small scraps of fabric that can translate into ART… celebrating your decisions with threads, cloth, and some new friends in the classroom that will have their own path to follow and encourage you and share as you work together.

This class will bring you closer to sharing a connection with the art of Japanese BORO art and perhaps start you on a journey with bits and pieces that will inspire all new work. Join me for a full day with some samples from my handy work – and you will only need to bring some of your favourite pieces of cloth, scissors, needles, and thread.

Oh, and don’t forget, you will need the willingness to try a new technique that reminds you of years of work done by those around the other side of our world that walked before us.

Contact me to register and the full-day fee is $60, by e-transfer (email me at bethanygarner.art[at]gmail.com)

TWO EVENINGS, one workshop - $60
Imagine the fun of exploring fibre art play with a group of friends in a setting that will allow you to create an original piece of FIBRE ART along with a learning experience that is FUN!

Register here through Eventbrite or contact Bethany at bethanygarner.art[a]gmail.com

 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wool-art-yarn-and-stitch-tickets-554510324307

Making cloth art and using favourite cotton or wool threads and yarns, often from her stash of weaving project yarns or handspun wool by local friends, Beth begins the design play with a few favourite, easy-to-learn stitch patterns: french knots, lines, and crosses, circles created with blanket stitch and often, just running stitch!

In this workshop, students will receive a rectangular piece of either black or white wool cloth and have a chance to try a few basic stitch repeated patterns on their cloth that will begin a journey to filling their cloth with their own pattern designs. (See my black and white stitched piece below)

A comprehensive handout will be included in the workshop, and with two evenings in a row to learn, practice and enjoy creating... students will go home with a piece that can be extended into days or weeks of work at home following the workshop as they continue in their own design play. Once finished, the work can be stretched over a canvas or laid into a frame for display.

IMPORTANT: Students will enjoy TWO EVENINGS, and the two consecutive evening WOOL ART CLASS sessions for registered students are booked with the first evening session, Part One starting at 5 pm, and running to 9 pm on March 28 th, and Part Two, second evening same hours on March 29th, 2023

Hoping you will join in on the fun. Drop by Studio 214D at the Tett Centre if you have questions.

** Samples of using hand stitches on wool bases are below... students will work on an Instructor -supplied black or white wool cloth in this workshop, using threads they bring to share. Feel free to bring your own cloth to stitch.!

My favourite project last winter, and now sharing a home with a couple in Georgian Bay, this piece is black Dorr Wool with a centre circle of blanket stitch, french knots and some cross marks, and then the fun begins as the rest of the cloth is filed with hand stitches in random placement. Good fun and EVERYONE can do this!!

This one shares wool "wet felted art" base and some cheesecloth that has been dyed on a dyed background... machine stitched... good fun for another option down the road.

Dorr wool that hs been eco-printed using natural leaves, flowers, and a couple of catalpa pods, a couple of steel washers from my hubby's garage, and lots of stitching. This project is for another day, but my summer 2023 ART CAMP at the TETT Centre is coming in July - so another workshop could be on your calendar...

A Totally wonderful week of FIBRE FOCUSED ART CAMP with about 26 friends over 7 days...

 FIBRE FOCUSED ARTS CAMP/RETREAT

Bethany Garner, Instructor and Resident Artist

Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Studio 214D, Creativity Studios, Level 2

Here sharing the fun I had with amazing friends old and new...a week of 7 terrific days together

For the love of art.... we gathered at the Tett Centre in Kingston where I have my Resident Artist Studio and began the adventure of working with 6 different techniques over the days we had together.

Artists came from all across Ontario and we shared the fun-filled days of working on new projects - Flat Dyeing with 16 gallons of Procion MX Dyes, Mark Making, Gelli Printing, Eco-Printing, Wet Felted Art, and Indigo dyeing... all full days and full of excitement and joyful banter as the artists worked.

After introductions, the students were anxious to grab a favourite table space and get started. Their carts and bags were unloaded, and the morning "class-like" project start sharing from me, and with just a bit of demonstration, I spent the rest of each day doing individual chats, technique support, finding the right tools for the 'newbies' and providing individual table assistance as the artists began their adventures... all great fun for me!

I look forward to bringing another round of this great workshop week to more students as the months fly by - imagine the surprise as the students got home and rinsed out all of their fabrics - did the minor clean-up of all they went home with for transient dyes and bits of fibres that might just work in new projects... we had so much fun!!

Just a few photos - more to come when I get a minute to post!! THANK YOU to all of the students who made this move from Pandemic Lockdown days a treat for ME!!

Carole Jane Treggett art cloth - hand dyed

Eco-Printing - Shirley MacGregor

My "drop sheets" from the students Indigo play that I will use in MY artwork (great idea)

Wet Felted art in the start mode - this turned out to be a beautiful colour block when finished

I am busy these summer days preparing to share my two-day Indigo Dye Play Retreat Workshop at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. Our Centre is steps away from the Lake Ontario Waterfront shoreline and is certainly an inspiration for students coming to enjoy learning and creating with our Resident Artists and instructors.

I have planned a fun-filled opportunity for you to come and enjoy an opportunity to learn about working with friends in our Community of Fibre Artists and those who are learning the art of creating with Natural Dyes (we will be using Jacquard Natural Indigo in this workshop weekend).

Mark your calendars and visit the Eventbrite link above to join me for these two days as our students will dye their pre-scoured cloth (2 metres of the beautiful white cotton lawn I use in all of my dyeing work will be provided to each student) or yarns of their choice with INDIGO dye the first day.

On Day Two, students will enjoy time and space for creating new artwork at their own tables and with their cloth or yarns that were created on day one. A supplies list for what you need to bring for the workshop weekend will be supplied with confirmed registration. Sewing machines and related accessories including rotary cutting tools, scissors, and threads are needed. (or stitch by hand - your choice)

Hope you will join me as we share two great creative days together... dye play is exciting and learning the many various techniques for folding, clamping, tying, and stitching designs for your samples. The fun of dipping your cloth into the dye vats is a valuable skill.

On Day Two, we will find students creating a new piece of their own original artwork... or perhaps a small garment or other items like Jornal covers, home decor items of your choice.

Seats are LIMITED to 10 participants and so, please don't wait! Do contact me with questions and I look forward to seeing YOU soon.
